Sometimes it is incontinence and other times it is just a fact that as a dog (or even people) get older, they just have to go pee more often or can’t hold it as long as they used to!
Of the 100+ senior dogs I have cared for, incontinence or the need to go out more often was simply expected. And for those who are being introduced to this with your senior dog, it is really no big deal and easy to deal with. I find that most people just aren’t aware of the various products that exist. Or also the products that exists for people that work great for dogs too!
One of the routine changes that people get frustrated about is when your dog has been enjoying sleeping and laying on the couch or your bed, but now they are leaking pee. No need to stop giving them that enjoyment! I use hospital pads – or bed pads – that are made for people. They are washable and can have stylish patterns or nice looking materials. They just look like blankets on your couch. You can even put them under the bed’s sheets or your couch’s washable covers.
